“Broomie Broomie” is a familiar chant that sweeps through Jamaican neighborhoods on any weekend morning. Growing up in a family of broom makers, Jahdon was overcome with nostalgia when visiting South Florida where he quickly observed an abundance of Palm Thatch, the same used in traditional Jamaican brooms.
Jahdon traveled to South Florida in March 2020 to promote his debut studio album “369”. 2020 already brought strong recognition starting with an album launch in Kingston, multiple performances during Jamaica’s Reggae Month and a Jamaica Gleaner review dubbing him as “Reggae Music’s Next Messenger”(February, 2020). The mission was to expand his musical footprint in South Florida by connecting with local radio stations and meeting with a rapidly growing fan base.
In a “COVI-cious” turn of events all promotional appearances and interviews were suddenly cancelled due to state-wide quarantine. Beckoning Jahdon’s musical messages from the album ‘369’, the unexpected events spoke directly to his power of innovation, forward movement and unique strategies. Jahdon intuitively turned observation into re-creation.
As a native of Canaan Heights, aka “Broom Town” in Clarendon, Jamaica. Jahdon was blessed with knowledge of traditional countryside broom making. The materials needed were right before him in South Florida. His first set of brooms made from Florida Palm Thatch were a gift for a friend. Adding ‘red, gold and green’ reggae colored paint along the long slender handles brought a wild fire of broom requests from all over the world after photos were posted on social media. Traditionally, Jamaican families buy two brooms, one for the house and one for the yard. Suddenly, the large number of fans requesting brooms two at a time, inspired Jahdon to make more for fans in North America. There is no specific price,as they are hand-made one of a kind collector’s item, made by the artist himself. All that is asked is for fans to cover shipping and make a reasonable contribution of their choosing. What a great way to show support for reggae music in the absence of festivals and shows!
